Dear Snow,

Your Ravellenic sweater is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!  I just love it!  You said you enjoyed working with the yarn, but didn’t say what yarn it is – unless I missed it somewhere and that’s always possible with me.  Is the moebius cowl you’re knitting a true moebius?  It’s really a pretty pattern.

Opal Handpaint

Remember these – or should I say this? I knitted one of these socks as a store sample when the Knaughty Knitter first opened. The yarn is Opal Handpaint. Well, after eight years, I finally knitted the second sock. Actually, I had totally forgotten about them. If I remember correctly, you knitted a sock from the Opal 6 ply.

Yesterday, I finally got around to cleaning out the great recipe books that you gave me. They are now very neat and even have a place for recipes I want to try. If I like the recipes, they will have a permanent place in the books. Thanks again for the books. They are perfect for all those recipes I print off the Internet.  By the way, we had Hash Crap recently and of course, thought of you.

You asked if Reese’s coloring was unusual. I guess not as her mother was totally blonde with a little brownish red in her fur. Reese looked all blonde when she was groomed last Wednesday, but now is showing some reddish brown areas. We’re really not certain what color she will be when full grown.  Her color just keeps changing.  Joe Pierce was all black when he was a puppy and then changed to those cool colors that made him look like he was wearing a sweater. 🙂

I took the Nutribullet Cheesecake out of the oven a few minutes ago. Looking forward to trying it when it cools.

It’s only in the 50s here today and rather windy, so I’m going to go knit on my Polish Shawl and watch recorded Datelines and 48 hours.

I Do Remember Now

Dear Royce:

No need to apologize about not writing. As you know, I sometimes go more than a month without writing. I feel sometimes I have to have a lot to write, but that’s really nonsense, isn’t it? And I understand the doors thing. I usually get ideas while driving or somewhere else. I think, “I want to remember to tell Royce about this,” and the thought is soon gone, like a dream memory.

And I do remember that zip bag. I got it at the TNNA cash-n-carry market in Franklin several years ago. The vendor gets them from a woman who generally makes them from upholstery fabric samples, just like Lisa does. When I saw the sunflower pattern, I thought of you. I’m glad you get so much use from it.

Reese Jo looks SO different than her early puppy pictures. Would you say her coloring is unusual?

It’s so nice you have the early stuff already planted! We have had a few days above freezing, even one or two days into 40s, but it’s been a really cold March so far. It has not been unusual for it to be in single digits, especially overnight, and most days are in the teens and 20s. The wind is always pretty bitter. We have had some miserably cold rain this week when it got above freezing. Despite the temperatures, we have had lots of sun and a good amount of the snow has melted off. Most of the huge snow piles are still pretty sizeable though. More snow is in the forecast for tonight/tomorrow. It would be nice to have some spring-like weather soon.

I finished my Ravellenic sweater, the Aidez. I actually finished it, including blocking, on March 4. I finally took some pictures of it. I love working with the yarn so much, but it is a bit itchy to the skin. Mother would say that the itchiness keeps your blood circulating better and keeps you warmer. 🙂 I would love to make a shawl from this yarn, something really large and great for wrapping up in.

Currently I’m working on a moebius cowl called Roam. I’m using Knit One Crochet Two Kettle Tweed from the Knaughty Knitter.

Work has been so busy. We’re ramping up on a new project that seems to keep changing. There is so much paperwork (ugh) just getting people ready for this. I’m generally okay with some paperwork, but it’s really getting tiring with all the downloading, printing, signing, scanning, uploading, and emailing here. I’m sure all the people are tired of it to, but they seem to roll with the punches with good grace.

I just got my Nutribullet on Friday. I raced out at lunch to pick it up. I did read through the literature (why can’t there be just one book?) and made a list of things I needed to pick up. I’ve made 3 smoothies so far. I pounded down my kale-strawberry-blueberry-banana-cashew smoothie this morning and wanted another one immediately!

Now, Do You Remember?

Dear Snow,

I have certainly been remiss in posting in our blog.  I think about it a lot and then the thought goes away.  Story of my life.  It’s those doors.  They are to blame for my forgetfulness.  I walk through a door and forget what I was going to do.  Oh, well.

Here is the bag I was telling you about.  Do you remember it now?  I think you got it on a knitting trip when you worked at the Knaughty Knitter.  I really love the bag and use it all the time for my knitting accessories.  And – drum roll………  it was made right here the good old USA!  That’s a big plus!

Guess it’s still cold way up north where you are. We are having a very pleasant day – mostly sunny and 65 degrees. It was 72 yesterday and I really enjoyed that. The temperature is supposed to drop down in the 20s for a couple of nights this coming week, but hopefully, it won’t last long.

I have planted sugar snap peas, spinach and kale. They will be fine with the cold weather coming up. Next week, I will plant lettuce and radishes. I can’t wait until time to plant cucumbers. Cucumbers are our favorite and a part of our juicing every morning. They are rather pricey at the grocery, of course, so hopefully we will soon have an abundance of them.

Reese Jo is now taking her intermediate training classes and doing quite well. She learns very quickly and does everything she is supposed to in class and here at home. There are times that she gets too excited and acts like a crazy doggie, though. She is full of energy, but that’s normal at almost five months old. She is changing in looks and is now almost all blonde, but her tail is still black. We’re not sure what she will look like when she is full grown. She’s shorter than Joe Pierce was, but weighs almost ten pounds, the same as Joe.

So, what are you up to? What are you knitting? Have you tried your Nutribullet yet? We are still juicing every morning and really enjoying it!

Leftovers, Dryer Balls, and Hugh

Dear Royce:

I just stumbled across this article published last year on things to do with yarn leftovers. Some of the ideas were new to me.

My sister asked me about wool felted dryer balls. Had I made them? What are they for? I wasn’t sure I’d heard of them. I did what any good sister researcher does. I googled.

  • They are supposed to cut drying time
  • They are supposed to reduce static
  • They are supposed to reduce wrinkles
  • They are supposed to eliminate harsh chemicals and reduce allergens

thegoodmama.com tutorial for making wool felted dryer balls

You can buy them from Amazon, on Etsy, or make your own. I found several tutorials, including this one.

Wool isn’t a problem, but I would have to buy pantyhose. Can you still buy pantyhose? Would Spanx work?

P.S. I saw Hugh Bonneville in a movie last night. I won’t tell you what happened, but he died early in the movie.

Dear Snow,

Thank you so much for the beautiful Blue Moon yarn!  It arrived right on my birthday, too.   I love all the colors and can’t wait to knit a pair of socks out of it.  I really appreciate your thoughtfulness!

I love your seasonal tree and glad you are having fun with it. I remember when one of my grandkids asked why I still had my Christmas tree up. I told her that it is only a Christmas tree at Christmas and it changes during the year. She just kind of looked at me strangely.

You’re correct. Reese keeps getting lighter, but now her back is getting darker again. LJ always said it looked like Joe Pierce was wearing a sweater and we’re thinking Reese may look like that, too. I feel so badly for Abby’s mommy and daddy as I know how much they will miss her. So glad they have Ellie Mae.

Going out to dinner, as usual, tonight after Mass. The kids and grandkids will be here tomorrow. Guess I’ll just celebrate all weekend. Nothing wrong with that.

To answer your questions:

What are you working on these days? I finished a very plain wrap for spring. Still working on a jacket and of course, socks and socks and socks. I started another pair yesterday, but may have to cast on another pair with the yarn you gave me. Can’t wait to see how it knits up.

What do you think of Season 4 of Downton Abbey? Spoiler warning here. My only complaint with Season 4 is that it seemed to go too fast. I wanted more and more. Absolutely loved the closing scene of the finale. What a sweet, happy note to end on. So different from the ending of Season 3.

Do you think Bates did it? I’m just not sure, but it seems like it. If he did, I don’t blame him and I hope he doesn’t get caught!

Thanks again for your sweet birthday message and the beautiful yarn!

Happy Birthday, Royce!

Dear Royce:

Your spring tree looks marvelous! I was looking at flowers at the dollar store the other day, for the same reason. Yes, I left my Christmas tree up, which must be called the seasonal tree. (Or maybe a big indoor house plant?) It is easier than packing it away and finding some place to store it. I did decorate for Icicle Season and now it’s decorated for Valentine’s, which needs to change fast, as it is March 1.

DSCN2943Speaking of March 1, it’s your birthday!

Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday, Dear Royce,
Happy birthday to you!

I know you wanted Spring for your birthday. It must be in short supply, so although I went out shopping for some to send you, the shelf was completely bare and dusty at all stores. They do, however, have plenty of Spring-like accoutrements—shorts, swimsuits, sandals, and beach towels. If one needed winter gloves or boots or a snow shovel, one would be hard-pressed to find any of that.

This week has been another bitter cold one. Yesterday was the coldest day of the week, with air temperatures and wind chills dipping well down into the double digits around these parts. This morning, it’s 33 degrees warmer than it was 24 hours ago—and feels so much warmer one could run around without hat, gloves, or scarf. Imagine feeling warmer at 22 degrees? It’s lightly snowing. We are supposed to get 2-5 inches by tomorrow morning.

Progress on my Ravellenic 2014 cardigan slowed down considerably after the end of the Olympics. I still had about 1/2 of the yoke to knit. Last night I worked on it the most I have since last weekend. Then I realized I hated how the decreases were effecting the patterning, so I ripped back about 8 rows, so I’m about 10 rows from getting to the collar. I want to get this done today so I can move on. I think I will finish a WIP and start a pair of socks.

  1. What are you working on these days?
  2. What do you think of Season 4 of Downton Abbey? Spoiler warning here.
  3. Do you think Bates did it?

In pictures, Reese is much lighter than she was as a younger puppy. She doesn’t mind the cold because she is a puppy. Kids!

What sad news about our friends in Missouri. I’m sorry they lost their Golden Retriever, Abby. It seems like only yesterday they got her as a puppy dog.

I hope you have great plans for your birthday celebration today. I assume LJ will take you out for supper.

Have a great day! And Cheers!
